The principle of creating a World Day for Audiovisual Heritage was adopted last October by the General Conference of UNESCO and it was decided to undertake a feasibility study on this subject. While recognizing the necessity to promote the preservation of audiovisual archives, the International Council on Archives asked the Intergovernmental Council of the UNESCO International Programme Information For All (IFAP) in March 2006 for the broadening of this initiative to encompass all archives, whatever their support medium or format. The Council strongly supported this request.
UNESCO recently launched on its web site a public consultation on the feasibility of the World Day on Audiovisual Heritage on the basis of a questionnaire oriented only on audiovisual archives. Please read these documents and send your comments to the expert in charge of the study before the 31 July, hoping that those comments will be taken into account. For his part, the ICA Secretary General answered on behalf of its 1500 members, reminding UNESCO of the necessity of having an all encompassing approach to the question of archives.

Le principe de la creation d'une journee mondiale du patrimoine audiovisuel a ete adopte par la Conference generale de l'UNESCO en octobre dernier et il a ete decide de faire une etude de faisabilite sur cette question. Tout en reconnaissant la necessite de promouvoir la preservation des archives audiovisuelles, le Conseil international des archives a demande en mars 2006 au Conseil intergouvernemental du Programme Information Pour Tous de l'UNESCO l'elargissement de cette initiative a l'ensemble des archives quels qu'en soient le support et le format. Le Conseil a vivement soutenu cette demande.
L'UNESCO vient de lancer une consultation publique sur son site sur la faisabilite de la Journee du patrimoine audiovisuel sur la base d'un questionnaire uniquement axe sur les archives audiovisuelles.
