The Society of Hellenic Archives is deeply concerned about the 50% funding cuts the italian government has imposed on the State Archives and the Sopratendenza. We, in Greece, know very well that the Archives cannot function and fulfill their role which is to preserve and give access to records and archives to the citizens all over the country, when the annual budget for 2003 is 100.000 euros and the human effectifs (55 permanent employees), numbers much lower than the minimum needs. The italian government has to reconsider this decision as all countries members of the European Community should try to maintain and develop the memory and culture of their people. Therefore we appeal the italian government to restore full funding so as to save the vital role played by the nation's archives.
